How to compare two texts online

TextDifference is a free text compare tool that shows exactly what changed between two versions of a document, message or piece of code.

  1. Paste the original into the left box and the changed version into the right box.
  2. Pick Lines, Words or Characters, depending on how fine-grained you want the check.
  3. Read the highlighted result in side-by-side or inline view, then copy it if you need it.

When to use a diff checker

Review edits to contracts and articles, check config file changes, compare API responses, verify copy-pasted code, or find the one character that breaks a string match.

Features

Instant, accurate differences

A longest-common-subsequence algorithm finds the smallest set of additions and deletions. Changed lines also highlight the exact words that differ.

Flexible comparison

Ignore case, ignore whitespace, swap the two texts, and switch between views without losing your input.

Private by design

The comparison runs in your browser. TextDifference has no backend, no upload and no account, so your text stays on your device.

At a glance

  • Free, no signup, works on desktop and mobile
  • Side-by-side and inline diff views
  • Compare by lines, words or characters
  • Case-sensitivity and ignore-whitespace options
  • One-click copy of the diff result

Frequently asked questions

What is TextDifference?

TextDifference is a free online text compare tool and diff checker. It highlights the additions and deletions between two texts or pieces of code, side-by-side or inline, by lines, words or characters. It runs 100% client-side in your web browser.

How do I compare two texts for differences?

Paste the original text in the left box and the modified text in the right box. The differences appear instantly below: green marks additions, red marks removals or changes, and gray text is unchanged. Choose Words, Lines or Characters to control how precise the comparison is.

Is my confidential text secure?

Yes. TextDifference runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. The text you type or paste is never uploaded, stored or sent to a server by TextDifference, so your comparisons stay on your device.

What is the difference between inline and side-by-side diff?

Side-by-side view shows the original on the left and the modified text on the right, aligned row by row. Inline view merges both into a single column where removed text is followed by added text. Side-by-side is easier for scanning long files; inline is more compact on small screens.

Should I compare by words, lines or characters?

Use Lines for code, config files and lists. Use Words for sentences and documents, where you want to see which words changed. Use Characters for spotting typos, case changes or tiny edits in short strings.

Can I ignore case and whitespace differences?

Yes. Turn off Case sensitive to treat uppercase and lowercase letters as equal, and turn on Ignore whitespace to skip differences in spaces, tabs and indentation.

Can I use TextDifference to compare code?

Yes. Lines mode works like a typical code diff, and changed lines also highlight the exact words that differ. Use Ignore whitespace to skip indentation-only changes.

Is TextDifference free?

Yes. TextDifference is free and needs no signup. Very large inputs may be slow in Words or Characters mode, so switch to Lines for big files.
